These games also <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"06fb92dc-54af-480c-aeb4-0a9be83b5c89\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text tended to get\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:got\">tended to get<\/span> middling <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"938ef4c2-1b87-4e57-91cb-87aaa89f9770\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text review scores\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:ratings\">review scores<\/span> from critics. I do wonder if, post Souls, many people would find <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"72699632-a8a2-4eb4-90dd-ceae2963c1d1\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text a new\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:themselves with an\">a new<\/span> appreciation for the design philosophy that <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"8ddc007d-0cf9-467b-ba05-476688f4d24e\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text went\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:was incorporated\">went<\/span> into many of these titles&#8230; But I digress. The point that I wanted to make here is that FromSoftware should bring Lost Kingdoms <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"b3807909-8062-4d46-879d-1320b12e02f7\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text back,\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:back. This is\">back,<\/span> because if the FromSoftware team gave it the same makeover that resulted in King&#8217;s Field becoming Demon&#8217;s <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"b9d39d36-e523-4090-a465-9eddee30d099\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text Souls, then Lost\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:Souls, Lost\">Souls, then Lost<\/span> Kingdoms could be something special indeed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"395f92bf-8f48-4cde-9a34-d004b11a497b\">For those that have never played Lost Kingdoms or its sequel, these two games were action RPGs that FromSoftware developed for the Nintendo GameCube. They both had some pretty dark themes, were fairly challenging, and had a story that asked players to <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"50540cee-33ee-4e19-ba7c-e4f417ada536\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text do a lot of interpretation\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:interpret\">do a lot of interpretation<\/span> for themselves. Common FromSoftware techniques, in other words.<\/p>\n<p data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"9eaf7bbe-2f65-4f18-83cf-b2fd321f2af8\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitallydownloaded.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/5658968-lost-kingdoms-ii-screenshot.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot from Lost Kingdoms II\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"a2b32ae3-072f-44c3-8dbc-e801350e7707\">One area where these <span data-issueid=\"d9500b41-640c-46e9-ad85-c6d72b4ce87f\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text games did depart\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:games depart\">games did depart<\/span> from their JRPG <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"317981d1-86b8-4c99-9072-ef8e795f8845\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text peers at the time, was\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:peers was\">peers at the time, was<\/span> that you\u2019re not really doing the fighting yourself. <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"0c87a9ea-c85b-4e21-9c27-145fc3a0a8c4\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text Rather, you\u2019ve got\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:You have\">Rather, you\u2019ve got<\/span> access to a deck of cards. These cards represented spells that you could <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"cf3e7baa-508e-41e0-a080-de36e908afea\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text cast, and most\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:cast. Most\">cast, and most<\/span> of the spells would either summon a monster to fight for you for a while, or give you a one-off attack to directly target an enemy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"2f1d9a5d-f7f5-461d-8eeb-e55038342792\">There was a deck-building element in which you could acquire (or capture) new cards, and that was the primary way <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"b6e3a3e4-6be6-454f-81ed-f79edc12f97f\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text that you powered\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:to power\">that you powered<\/span> up to take on the <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"d5d892c0-306e-494a-b996-b517966e310c\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text bigger\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:more challenging\">bigger<\/span> challenges. The original Lost Kingdoms was split up into discrete <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"7c426f36-937a-4d17-b800-7d24c195cf91\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text levels, and one\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:levels. One\">levels, and one<\/span> of the <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"942c5046-cd05-4b1a-9735-0d53c0dc4691\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text bigger\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:biggest\">bigger<\/span> <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"80462865-5262-4cf3-8bad-a7bf313011d5\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text challenges there was\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:challenges was\">challenges there was<\/span> getting to the objective of the level without the deck of cards running <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"05711789-7eb9-44ed-9a31-0291eaecfb1b\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text out in fighting\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:out fighting\">out in fighting<\/span> random enemies. You <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"c010efe6-05d2-4c2b-af7b-0cdef2611a89\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text were only able to use\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:could only use\">were only able to use<\/span> each card in your deck once per venture, so when trying to complete the level, you need to conserve your <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"b10ab089-196a-4fa3-8d97-1a1611d8b578\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text best\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:most valuable\">best<\/span> cards for the challenges <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"c396ed1e-fa15-4105-859d-28e17c6291a3\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text in\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:at\">in<\/span> the end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"bfcbff12-296f-4978-8db0-4dc7525e854f\">The most tactical way to play was to venture into a level several times, with the first few trips to <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"f866685b-e0fe-484d-b377-64e8d6cf0f57\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text collect the treasure\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:collect treasure\">collect the treasure<\/span> and explore around for secrets, before retreating back out, resetting your deck, and <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"25717f93-dcc0-450e-b6b4-4e1363d76c44\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text making a delve\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:diving\">making a delve<\/span> to reach the end of the level. This slowed down progression through the game, of course, but it gave Lost Kingdoms that methodical, deliberate pacing that is almost iconic to FromSoftware.<\/p>\n<p data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"1f77ca91-01d5-43c3-b5e9-a6b544f4c1b5\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitallydownloaded.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/2_QmZZUj2.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot from Lost Kingdoms II\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"b3aabbc4-a512-420d-8ca7-5ad54388c4c6\">I don\u2019t remember Lost Kingdoms II <span data-issueid=\"ceb8ade2-2649-44a5-966b-f5a840e612c5\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text anywhere near as well,\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:very well,\">anywhere n<\/span><span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"ceb8ade2-2649-44a5-966b-f5a840e612c5\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text anywhere near as well,\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:very well,\">ear as well,<\/span> but I do remember it had a more open approach to level design, with a greater focus on using spells and abilities to <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"5c9944dd-9562-4dad-9dfe-df35a6403fce\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text make your way past\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:pass\">make your way past<\/span> environmental obstacles \u2013 another FromSoftware specialty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"070e5ab8-6ec0-4e9a-9c5c-4bf528132d74\">In fact, these <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"0ccb49a7-f9d2-4569-acd8-674088a96d31\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text games to represent\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:games represent\">games to represent<\/span> so much of what has made FromSoftware such <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"fb49dfd8-1287-43d2-8bef-beacebe6a8cc\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text a unique\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:an exceptional\">a unique<\/span> entity in the games industry. I have always admired that willingness to <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"5b5fa3bd-f24f-4765-9751-d4b84ba75814\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text have the gameplay\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:have gameplay\">have the gameplay<\/span> support the creative <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"e7843fda-3cf5-4f9b-b2f8-e879243b17f5\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text vision,\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:vision. This is\">vision,<\/span> even if that flies in the face of a <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"5b842d1a-7758-46a0-910e-1df9bb15e5a1\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text \u201cbest\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:&quot;highest\">\u201cbest<\/span> practice\u201d approach to game design. We see that <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"e4bb27f2-f893-468a-b695-974713e4ed10\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text to this day.\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:today.\">to this day.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitallydownloaded.net\/2022\/02\/review-elden-ring-sony-playstation-5.html\">Elden Ring<\/a> is a big, open-world RPG, but it is nothing <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"71057d35-11ae-4e4d-9051-536820b1ed02\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text like what a Rockstar,\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:like Rockstar,\">like what a Rockstar,<\/span> Ubisoft or Sony would do. In many ways it breaks the carefully <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"1fe09c96-cb6e-441f-8132-30821bddb57c\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text focus-grouped\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:targeted\">focus-grouped<\/span> approach that the other publishers <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"62cd0527-2bfb-41fd-a9df-c971d3c43d1d\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text would tell you\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:say\">would tell you<\/span> is <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"e52871bc-a1bc-4fca-979f-ef57bb4d089c\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text what the gamers\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:what gamers\">what the gamers<\/span> want. <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"6f62c631-c160-419d-b2fc-c1054545bae9\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text Yet Elden\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:Yet The Elden\">Yet Elden<\/span> Ring is <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-danger-default hover:bg-bg-danger-light-default\" data-issueid=\"99e705b5-617a-4e28-b610-eecd191eb2eb\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text the\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:a\">the<\/span> masterpiece. Lost Kingdoms <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"0098af9e-9abc-497c-bc1e-70bd063f2cdf\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text is a little like\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:is like\">is a little like<\/span> that. It is, simply, not the kind of game <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"f9741d99-576e-4ed7-b8ff-55d5f932b605\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text suits at\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:that\">suits at<\/span> other developers would greenlight. That&#8217;s likely why we\u2019ve not really seen any other games do what Lost Kingdoms did (though Koei Tecmo\u2019s Nights of Azure shares some elements in its own summon system). The lack of \u201cspiritual sequels\u201d or \u201chomages\u201d is generally a sign that a game flies in the face of best practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"9c5a25c4-f5fe-4064-a8b6-9e1da6ad4718\">Reviews for Lost Kingdoms were <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"a35120a2-8e56-4bbe-9f62-325f50df4a58\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text all over the place, too.\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:everywhere.\">all over the place, too.<\/span> The now-defunct Armchair Empire gave it 40\/100, writing: \u201cLost Kingdoms is a lost cause if you\u2019re not into card games.\u201d It\u2019s a silly criticism since that\u2019s like saying Call of Duty is pointless if you don\u2019t enjoy gun violence. Meanwhile, the <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"aff8cb51-70db-4316-9955-6029acc7a9bd\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text also now-defunt\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:now-defunct\">also now-defunt<\/span> GamePro gave it 90\/100, noting \u201cLost Kingdoms may not have much of a plot, but the battle system makes it a fine game <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"f2a956f6-63f4-4958-9a86-e764c9f0c9c3\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text worth the attention of all action\/RPG\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:worth action\/RPG\">worth the attention of all action\/<\/span><span data-issueid=\"f2a956f6-63f4-4958-9a86-e764c9f0c9c3\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text worth the attention of all action\/RPG\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:worth action\/RPG\">RPG<\/span> fans\u201d. I generally find polarising review scores like this to be the indication of a game that puts creativity <span data-issueid=\"f4671ace-466e-4878-876c-0f14bafdd2dc\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text first,\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:first. This is\">first,<\/span> because like with any art form, creativity comes with the risk that some people will absolutely hate it.<\/p>\n<p data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"51ec9a9f-3c0c-47dd-8ca6-8be0ddd5f5d5\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitallydownloaded.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/lost-kingdoms-19up.jpg\" alt=\"A screenshot from Lost Kingdoms I\" width=\"1280\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"pb-2 text-text-neutral-primary\" data-private=\"redact\" data-wt-guid=\"2f29534d-d706-47ac-aa11-18200fcbd51f\">But there&#8217;s a plus side <span data-issueid=\"6496c44b-32de-4788-a540-5c5ae7c37918\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text to the more creative\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:to creative\">to the more creative<\/span> games &#8211; they also tend to be memorable. Lost Kingdoms is right up there with the GameCube <span class=\"issue-underline underline text-text-neutral-primary decoration-2 underline-offset-4 transition decoration-border-brand-default hover:bg-bg-brand-light-default\" data-issueid=\"112a8c92-8800-46c0-ae14-a8f1eb586490\" aria-label=\"open issue for the following text titles that I have the fondest\" data-testid=\"issue-underline:titles I have fond\">titles that I have the fondest<\/span> memories of, and it and its sequel were among the first GameCube games I added to my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitallydownloaded.net\/2023\/07\/the-rog-ally-is-my-new-best-friend.html\">ROG Ally<\/a> to replay at some point in the near future (for now I&#8217;m working through a replay of Lord of the Rings: The Third Age and Final Fantasy XIII). I have, of course, loved seeing FromSoftware emerge and become one of the most beloved prestige developers out of Japan.
